Chipping Norton Music festival

It was a personal tragedy in Cherington which brought about the creation of what is now The Chipping Norton Music Festival. In 1902, Eleanora Dickins of Cherington House married her cousin the Rev Alan Dickins after much family resistance. Sadly he died of TB and Eleanora returned to Cherington aged 25 resolved to devote the rest of her life to good works in the community. She came from a musical family which is thought to have links with Edward Elgar. Both she and her sister Ruth played the violin and with several other family members provided accompaniment and solo items for many festivals.

Eleanora and her younger sister Ruth, must have had the same kind of vision when in 1903 they decided to organise a festival “for the encouragement of part singing in the country districts”.

The committee chose music for the choirs to sing during the dark winter evenings. Each choir was expected to produce a soloist, to sing an unaccompanied madrigal, sing in four parts and the programme had to include a choral work by a composer from the 16th century onwards.

An embroidered banner was to be made with the monogram of the Stour Choral union on it and a motto was chosen “There’s many a Crown for who can Reach” a quote from Robert Browning’s poem Last Ride Together. The first festival was successfully held on 13th April 1904 at Shipston-on-Stour possibly in the hostel which was also a small community centre. There were classes for glees, madrigals, vocal solos, male and female voice choirs and a chorus sung by the combined choirs, this all lasted a day with a concert in the evening which would be a combination of choral work and some solos by a professional.

The Festival is no longer solely about choral singing, there are instrumental classes for a wide range of instruments, speech and drama, guitar, folk and of course, the professional concerts. Tastes change and the Festival has embraced these and adapted the way it is run to suit a wide range of tastes and abilities. The Festival now lasts three weekends and all of the days between attracting entries from all over the country. Choirs of all age groups are still an integral part and for the 100th Festival 2012 a brand new choral work has been commissioned.

The Dickins sisters may not recognise the current Festival as the one they so earnestly began in 1904 but they would be immensely proud with what they see and the passion for music which flourishes in this area.

Meeting to discuss The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

There is a meeting in the village Hall at 7:30 on February 9th to discuss the CSS Villages Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Please come along and let us know your suggestions and give your opinion of where the Village Beacon should be lit.

To mark 60 years of the Queen’s reign the Diamond Jubilee will take place in 2012. The celebrations will centre around an extended weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.

The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897.

A Diamond Jubilee Pageant will take place at Windsor Castle in May 2012. Buckingham Palace will be co-ordinating a programme of events centred around the extended weekend. This will include a Big Jubilee Lunch, a Pageant on the River Thames, a concert at Buckingham Palace and the lighting of 2012 beacons throughout the United Kingdom. The Queen and other members of the Royal Family will also attend a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral.

As part of the celebrations, towns in the UK will also compete for city status and existing cities will compete for Lord Mayoralty (or Lord Provostship in Scotland). These will be granted by The Queen in her Jubilee year. Local authorities have been invited to apply and the results will be announced in the first half of 2012.

In London, Greenwich will be granted Royal Borough status in recognition of the historically close links between Greenwich and the monarchy. Like city status, Lord Mayoralty or Lord Provostship, this is a purely honorific award and confers no additional powers, functions or funding.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Bank holiday

There will be a special bank holiday for the Diamond Jubilee. The 2012 late May bank holiday will be moved to Monday 4 June 2012 and an additional Jubilee bank holiday will be on Tuesday 5 June 2012. The extra bank holiday and extended bank holiday weekend will also apply to Scotland.

Schools in England and Wales will be able to close on Tuesday 5 June 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. If a school is already closed on 5 June for half term or another reason, it will be able to close on an alternative day. Scotland and Northern Ireland will be making their own arrangements.

Pubs, bars and other licensed venues in England and Wales could be allowed to open to sell alcohol and put on entertainment until 1 am to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Taking part in the The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations

The Department for Communities and Local Government has produced guidance to help communities celebrate the Diamond Jubilee by organising street parties. You can also get information about street parties from the Big Lunch website.

Your local authority may also be able to provide details of any planned activities in your area. Communities can apply to the Big Lottery Fund for funding for a local event through the Awards for All Scheme.

THE NEW VILLAGE HALL PROJECT UPDATE

In recent months the Committee has made good progress with our project.

  • We have agreed to buy a plot of land next to the Playing Field on which to build the new hall.  However should we be refused Planning Permission the purchase does not have to proceed.
  • Warwickshire Rural Community Council has provided valuable advice on applying for a substantial grant from the National Lottery/Reaching Communities.
  • Architects are drawing up an initial plan to discuss with Stratford District Council with a view to refine the details before submitting a planning application.  This will cost us money so we want to be sure there will be no objections from SDC.
  • A public meeting will be arranged in the Spring to discuss and agree the proposed plans.
  • The New Village Hall Fund is in excess of £34,000 after the first two years of fund raising.

 Fund Raising Round Up

Lottery Winners

December ‘Double Bubble’ – Ennis Webster £240, Susan Parker £120, John Davenport £80

January  – Myrtle Heald £120, Julie Forrest £60, Sally Clubley £40.

Travellers Tales

The December Travellers Tales with Steve the Dentist was a fascinating insight to life along the Amazon but proved how badly we need a new hall!  It was uncomfortable and freezing!  Erica declared that the 20 or so brave souls that braved the conditions deserved medals.

Spring will see their return with a Toy Library for Zimbabwe, a trip to Brazil with a group of sixth formers to meet ‘street children’, and India in a Rolls Royce!

The last Coffee Shop of 2010 was the day the snow came, Angela, Alf and Jenny did a brilliant job with lots of bacon sandwiches and hot drinks in the face of extreme cold and frozen pipework!  The children sang Christmas songs and carols, Harry sold a large quantity of kindling and Jane’s beautifully decorated themed Muffins were snapped up for Christmas treats and gifts!  By the end of the morning there was almost nothing left of the last few items of the Christmas Gift Stall.  This was the fourth appearance including a trip to the Shipston Victorian Evening, these generously produced chutneys, shortbreads, gifts and decorations raised over £350.

In the face of yet more ice and snow Ann H raised a team of willing supporters who cheered as many households as they could manage with festive carol singing and kind donations raised £156 which was shared between the Village Hall and the Salvation Army.

Rounders at Stourton / Cherington Playing Fields

We had a  nice fun game of rounders down at the playing fields today.

I took L and T along at about 3:30 and initially the kids (about 10 or 12 of them) had a little knock about amongst themselves with me and John doing the fielding and bowling.

It was a lovely afternoon, the sun was shining and there were very few clouds in the sky, the nice weather bought a few more parents/adults out and at about 4:30 we started a game of the men against the ladies.

The ladies batted first  and scored a grand total of 1 and 1half rounders, the half was for 3 no balls, and the rounder was one of those comedy of errors where the ball was hardly hit, but was thrown to the wrong base everytime and the final throw to 4th base went over everuyones heads in to the hedge at the back.

The men came in to bat and had already scored 2 rounders within the first 4 or 5 men, we eventually went on to score about 8 or 9 and were easy winners.

After the game we srolled down to the Cherington Arms where John had laid on a fine spread of hot dogs and chips for everyone.

All in all it was a great afternoon, I came home worn out though and are al;ready stiffening up, both the kids really enjoyed it and were tucked up in bed early , worn out too.

Vouchers for luxury Afternoon Teas

We love the whole concept of Afternoon Tea. It’s as English as croquet and normally associated with little old ladies daintily handling fancy cakes on doilies, but traditional Afternoon Teas are the coolest outing on the planet at the moment.

Ok we might be exaggerating a bit, but there’s no denying the tide is turning. We’re not so enamoured by the American deli-style coffee experience as we were a few years ago. Maybe we’ve just got tired of those pretentious ‘Skinny decaff double shot latte to go’ type moments.

Instead it’s all about fine leaf tea, freshly made sandwiches (with the crusts cut off of course) and cream-filled little cakes and scones that will score you no points with Mr Cholesterol, but who cares when it all tastes so good.

You can even make a day out of an Afternoon Tea, with hotels now offering vouchers for luxury Afternoon Teas in their swanky hotel lounges. Long live the British institution of Afternoon Tea!

Kids’ chocolate making party

How come sticky fingers and happy, smiley children usually go hand in hand? Well, there’s nothing better than seeing your little ones having fun and I reckon I’ve found the ultimate combination with a kids’ chocolate making party.

Professional chocolatiers take charge of the gaggle of giggling children for a couple of hours of tasty fun with chocolate. The kids get to make and decorate their very own chocolate creations and the whole emphasis is on fun.

I reckon these kids chocolate making workshops would be excellent for birthday parties and it’s super easy to organise as you buy a voucher online for a group of eight children, or you can buy individual places if there are between nine and 20 little darlings all keen to get their mitts on the cocoa!

Clay Pigeon Shooting Organisations

If you are interested in joining one the many clay pigeon shooting organisations in the UK, you might like to start by looking at the site of the governing body for the sport – the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association at http://www.cpsa.co.uk. Throughout the UK you can find numerous shooting clubs, regional clay pigeon shooting organisations and local gun clubs, so a visit to the site covering your local area should help you find a club that fits your needs.

It’s becoming much more common these days to see so called experience websites entering the clay scene and one such site is Intotheblue who offer clay pigeon shooting throughout the country which effectively offers a one stop shop for not only clay shooting but also other unrelated activities.

Throughout the home counties and extending to the north of the UK, there are a host of shooting associations and clay pigeon organisations that will allow you to participate in the sport wherever your location. The most inclusive source of information for this is the CPSA website.  If you live in or around London, then you might like to consider the CSPA registered West London Shooting School – find out more online at http://www.shootingschool.co.uk/.

If you live in Scotland and would like to know about clay pigeon shooting organisations in your local area, then the first place you might like to look is the on the website for the Scottish Clay Target Association website at www.scta.co.uk

In Wales there are many local clubs that you can attend for clay pigeon shooting, and there is also a regional office for The British Association for Shooting and Conservation, which can be visited online at http://www.basc.org.uk.

If you are living in or visiting Northern Ireland, then you can find a list of clay pigeon shooting organisations in your local area at http://www.outdoorni.com. This includes a range of clubs, so you can find a quality organisation with which to participate in a shoot.

Britain has a range of clay pigeon shooting organisations. If you love outdoor activities, then you will be sure to find somewhere with quality shoots and pleasant surroundings in which to have an enjoyable shooting experience.
