Mobile Library

This is a really beneficial service for people living in the villages and who like to remain independent.
WCC are reviewing the provision and it is likely the service will be discontinued where stops have only one user. The libraries carry fiction, non-fiction, a small selection of books for children and are happy to meet requests for particular items. Anyone can join, it is easy and enjoyable and a huge help to those who rely on the service.

In March and April the Mobile Library will be calling at the three villages on Friday 9th March, Friday 30th March & Friday 20th April. Stops/times as follows:
Cherington – Featherbed Lane 10.30am – 10.55am, Bus Shelter 11.15 – 11.35am

Cherington Jazz Evening 2012

Many people have asked whether there will be a Jazz Evening this summer. The organising committee have discussed this and decided not to hold a jazz evening this year.
Instead our aim will be to support the organising committee of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations to be held in the village in June.
Consideration will be given to holding a Jazz event next year with
the objective of keeping the event fresh and fun for the whole family.

Cherington Church Flowers

Would you like to help with Church Flowers? There are two ways you could help:

Either by joining a small team who come together about 4 times a year to decorate the Church for festivals (this year – Easter, Diamond Jubilee, Harvest Festival, Christmas). Alternatively I am looking for two or three more volunteers to complete the Church Flower Rota for 2012/2013. You don’t have to be a ‘flower arranger’, just someone who loves flowers and has one Saturday a year to take a turn on the rota. Please think about it, and let me know if you think you could help out once a year.
Many thanks, Sarah Scotter (686303).

The CSS New Village Hall

At two recent meetings of the Village Hall Committee all major considerations of the design were discussed and a consensus of opinion determined. However, before the final go ahead is given a little more information was required in regard to the roadside elevation of the building. These details are being prepared and should be ready for consideration in January. The committee will meet again and assuming the details are approved they will be displayed in the village hall prior to submission to the planning department in Stratford.

As with all projects needing input from a number of members the process can sometimes take longer than normal business decisions owing to the complexity of assembling many people at a time and to include as many as possible. This is felt necessary to ensure the project is inclusive.

When the plans have been approved by the committee they will be displayed in the village hall. Should the approval be ready well in advance of the next ‘Brick’ then information will be posted on the village notice boards/website.

It is very important that we get our submission right in order that we put the best case forward for the granting of planning permissions. Time spent now on preparation and behind the scenes work can pay dividends in the overall scheme.

Early 2012 still remains our target to get approval (hopefully!). Thereafter serious work can begin regarding execution of planning and the raising of grants.

Fundraising

Thank You!

The excellent events and activities of the last few weeks have provided lots of entertainment and variety and boosted the New Village Hall Fund.  Many people have given time, talent and energy in bringing about their success.   A huge thank you to everyone who has organised helped and supported the excellent Village Bash, the Sing Song Along, Travellers Tales from a great team of Sixth Formers, the Watercolour Workshop, the Plant and Cake Sale, and the delightful Summer Jazz Picnic!

The contents of several filled and refilled loose change pots are appreciated as are the contribution from those who use easyfundraising when shopping online (22 people are supporting and have raised £318.81 in this cost free way) – easyfundraising.org.uk.

Additionally thanks are due to both the regular and new volunteers who have run the Coffee Shop and Car Wash over the last months and to Alan for the Village Lottery.

The last Coffee Shop and Car Wash before the summer break will be on Saturday 25 June.

Lottery subscriptions for those paying by cheque or cash are due and anyone who would like to join or take an additional membership can contact Alan on 686861.    May winners were Antony Granville 1st  £120, Jean Davenport 2nd  £60, Jean Bryant 3rd £40.

Holiday season is a great opportunity to make a small contribution and have a little fun by taking Schubert the Bear with you and returning with a photo or too of the exotic, amazing, interesting and even compromising locations in which he finds himself – a few more and his album could be ready for it’s village debut in the cold months of winter!  Jenny 686381.

THE NEW VILLAGE HALL PROJECT UPDATE

In recent months the Committee has made good progress with our project.

  • We have agreed to buy a plot of land next to the Playing Field on which to build the new hall.  However should we be refused Planning Permission the purchase does not have to proceed.
  • Warwickshire Rural Community Council has provided valuable advice on applying for a substantial grant from the National Lottery/Reaching Communities.
  • Architects are drawing up an initial plan to discuss with Stratford District Council with a view to refine the details before submitting a planning application.  This will cost us money so we want to be sure there will be no objections from SDC.
  • A public meeting will be arranged in the Spring to discuss and agree the proposed plans.
  • The New Village Hall Fund is in excess of £34,000 after the first two years of fund raising.

Spring will see their return with a Toy Library for Zimbabwe, a trip to Brazil with a group of sixth formers to meet ‘street children’, and India in a Rolls Royce!

The last Coffee Shop of 2010 was the day the snow came, Angela, Alf and Jenny did a brilliant job with lots of bacon sandwiches and hot drinks in the face of extreme cold and frozen pipework!  The children sang Christmas songs and carols, Harry sold a large quantity of kindling and Jane’s beautifully decorated themed Muffins were snapped up for Christmas treats and gifts!  By the end of the morning there was almost nothing left of the last few items of the Christmas Gift Stall.  This was the fourth appearance including a trip to the Shipston Victorian Evening, these generously produced chutneys, shortbreads, gifts and decorations raised over £350.

In the face of yet more ice and snow Ann H raised a team of willing supporters who cheered as many households as they could manage with festive carol singing and kind donations raised £156 which was shared between the Village Hall and the Salvation Army.

Community Spirit – Odd Jobs and Helping Hands

One of the merits of the cold weather is the way people helped and supported each other and there were certainly some instances of remarkable assistance and kindness in that period.   There are a number of residents who willingly regularly and happily help out their friends and neighbours with small tasks and DIY jobs.  In one such instance the person doing refused any payment but the recipient who wished to give something chose to make a donation to the Village Hall Fund. Maybe individuals or small groups could do an hour or two of work/ help/advice that others might appreciate in return for a donation to the Village Hall Fund.   An evening of baby sitting, a couple of hours of gardening, cleaning, shopping, painting, dog walking, making a dessert, personal birthday cards, decorating a cake …………  What you could offer or would like help with – let me know (Annie 686523, anniethepatch@yahoo.co.uk) – it would be great to have a list of choices and requests for the next Brick!

Sally Clubley makes very beautiful delicate Christening Shawls of the kind which retail expensively in certain shops.   She is willing to make them for people here for just the cost of materials plus a suitable donation to the Village Hall Fund – 685190!

Support

Busy lives mean that sometimes people would like to support but are short of time.  A simple way of helping would be to sponsor the Tea and Coffee or the Car Wash Materials – if you could help then please let us know (anniethepatch@yahoo.co.uk)  686523.

Do you use E-Bay? Go via easyfundraising.com, nominate Cherington, Stourton and Sutton under Brailes Village Hall Fund, they will donate to us – easy.

The Village Bash!

with

‘The Dassett Hounds’

 Saturday 9th April   8-12 midnight

A fundraising event for the proposed new Cherington, Stourton and Sutton Village Hall

At the Village Hall                  Tickets are £10 each            Bring your own drinks and glasses

Simple food will be provided but those with special diets should bring their own

Some 15 years ago, six friends from the Avon Dassett area formed a band – The Dassett Hounds’ – playing 60’s and 70’s music.  They’ve played regularly ever since and never fail to improve any ‘Bash’.  One of the members, Martin Craddock and his partner Jayne, moved into Cherington Mill a few years ago.  They both love the village and now want to do whatever they can to help with the fundraising.

This is an invitation to our friends in all the surrounding villages to come and let your hair down (if you still have any!), dance the night away, have an evening to remember and stagger home around midnight.  You’re all welcome!

Why not make your first port of call the Cherington Arms for a little early hospitality before wandering up to the Village Hall.

We are restricted to 100 tickets on a first come first served basis so don’t miss out book early!

Book your tickets by contacting Harry Upson 686323, Annie Lewis 686523, or Martin and Jayne 685870.

We look forward to seeing you!

I WOULD LIKE TO HELP BUT I DON’T THINK THAT I COULD ORGANISE AN EVENT!?

Loose Change Pot – something that everyone can do – just put odd pennies and silver into a dish when you empty your pockets/purse.  Whenever the pot is full, put the change into a plastic bag and drop it in to Annie, The Patch or Jane Cameron at Dickins House.  This simple action has already raised £232 for the Fund.

If you use a computer or shop online – register and use Easy Fund Raising and Easy Search http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/Register/?char=16118 nominating Cherington Stourton and Sutton Village Hall Fund as your charity (it is on the list under C) it costs you nothing at all and as well as benefiting the Village Hall also has offers and vouchers for yourself to use.   £140 raised to date.

Take Schubert on holiday – the little bear who likes to travel and return with a photograph for the village album Jenny, Colin 686381.

Make a cake or bring excess vegetables to sell at the Coffee Shop.  Bring your car along to be washed.

Become a member of the Village Lottery, (£2400 raised so far), annual memberships costs just £5 a month and the odds on winning are far greater than the national one.  Members do not need to be residents of the village and it makes a great idea for an unusual present for a birthday, coming of age or anniversary.   Speaking from experience Grandad (age 84) was thrilled to pay off his speeding fine with his lotto win!   Alan – 686861.

Lottery Winners in June – £105 Mrs K Carr,  £55 Mr A Wright,  £35 Mrs S Parker.

Village Hall Fund Raising

The New Village Hall Fund Raising Project was launched in the last weekend of January 2009. Lots of hard work, fun, endeavour and new friendships have happened and as illustrated by the bricks at the top the fund now stands in excess of £26,000!   Thank you to those who have already made donations and/or organised and supported activities.

Recent action in the form of the Festival (over £400 to each of the Village Hall Fund and the Church), the Jazz evening (£1800), the Open Garden (£348), the Big Breakfast (£85), and sales of logs (£175) have been very successful – a huge thank you to those who organised, managed, helped and supported.

The Coffee Shop and Car Wash continue to provide a great service, social and meeting point and have raised £5000. The volunteers who take a turn running these are very much appreciated.
